What’s good for your muscles?

Tips for your active care routine – before, during, and after sports

Full speed ahead! Exercise stimulates your breathing, circulation, and metabolism. Those who engage in sports promote and challenge their bodies. However, you should not overstrain your muscles to avoid sports injuries such as strains. Prepare well and take enough time for recovery after training. You can also support your muscles in between. So you can always start again well.

Before sports: Warm-up

Good preparation is essential to prevent injuries and increase performance. Before sports, it is worth warming up the muscles that will be stressed through a massage, for example with Weleda Arnica Massage Oil, and preparing them with gentle stretching exercises. This prevents tension and muscle soreness. A massage with Arnica Massage Oil promotes blood circulation and loosens the muscles.

During training or on the go

You can also support your muscles during sports. With the Weleda Arnica Massage Roll-On with organic arnica blossoms, you can quickly and easily loosen tired and tense muscles thanks to its massage effect. It is handy and ideal for on the go, so you can use it anytime to relax your muscles.

After sports: Recovery and care

After sports, give your muscles time to recover and regenerate. Depending on the sport, season, or weather, you may sometimes prefer refreshment, sometimes soothing warmth.

A shower with the aromatic Arnica Sport Shower Gel has a revitalising effect. Afterwards, you can massage in our Arnica Cooling Gel. This promotes recovery after intensive training or sports activity and has a pleasantly cooling effect on local complaints.

The massage with Weleda Arnica Massage Oil or Arnica Massage Body Butter warms and promotes blood circulation. This allows you to relax your muscles and prevent muscle soreness. After bathing or showering, the oil can be massaged into the still damp skin. The skin is soft and smooth and natural regeneration is stimulated.

3 tips for self-massage after sports

Sports massages are a good method to relax the muscles and promote regeneration. Here are three tips on how to get the most out of your sports massage:

  1. Preparation: Your muscles should still be warm. A hot shower can help promote blood circulation and prepare the muscles for the massage.
  2. Technique: Start with light stroking movements and gradually increase the pressure. Focus on tense areas to relax the muscles and stimulate blood circulation. The practical thing about self-massage is that you can feel exactly how much pressure is comfortable. Make sure the massaged area remains relaxed while you actively massage yourself. The Weleda Arnica Massage Roll-On is ideal for targeting tension. The massage oil or Arnica Massage Body Butter is good for large-scale massages.
  3. Aftercare: After the massage, it is important to give the muscles time to recover. Drink plenty of water to support hydration and take a rest. The formulations of Weleda Arnica products have a caring component. Your skin also benefits from their application.

Take a Deep Breath

During training and recovery phases, our breath is an important tool. In water applications such as foot baths, showers, or full baths, the scent can also support relaxation. The scent of the oil or gel also affects us during massages. The Weleda Arnica Sports Care with its scent from 100% natural essential oils allows us to breathe deeply and soothingly. Thanks to the invigorating rosemary and relaxing lavender, the aromatic scent has a wonderfully balancing effect.

Arnica montana

Arnica grows in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe. It thrives best under intense sunlight. The delicate plant prefers acidic and poor meadows, avoids lime, and grows both in valleys and at altitudes of 2800 meters. Its typical yellow flowers can be seen from May to August. Arnica is also called mountain arnica and contains valuable ingredients such as flavonoids and carotenoids.

The arnica for Weleda comes from controlled organic cultivation in Germany. Its flowers are picked, dried, and then used for an oil extract that is contained in our Arnica care products.

Heat or Cold?

Twisted, overstretched, strained? For overloads that are accompanied by swelling or bruising, you should cool the area. Cold constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow. This prevents swelling and bruising from spreading.

Tense, tired muscles? Heat relaxes and loosens them more. The stretching of ligaments and muscle strands is supported by heat applications and warming up.

When muscles hurt

Bruise, sprain, strain? Or just muscle soreness?

What is the difference? Sprains, bruises, and strains are blunt injuries. Sprains affect the joints. For example, when twisting, the ligaments are overstretched and fiber tears can occur.

A strain is the overstretching or overloading of a muscle, for example during sprints, quick stops, or changes of direction. Tears in the fine muscle strands can occur. The muscle hurts, usually becomes hard and sensitive to pressure.

A bruise is usually the result of a fall or a blow. Here too, the muscle fibers are damaged. Bruises and swelling are the result.

How to Treat Sport Injuries Naturally

Arnica in Weleda Remedies

Proven since 1928: The first Arnica medications were already listed in the first Weleda medicine directory, such as Weleda Arnica Essence and Weleda Arnica Ointment 10%. Since then, numerous other medications with extracts from Arnica have been developed.

How do I know if I have severe muscle soreness or a strain?

A strain usually hurts immediately after the muscle is overstretched. Muscle soreness occurs some time after exercise. If you have a strain, you should definitely take a break from sports and treat the strain. If you have muscle soreness – no matter how painful it is – you can continue training. It's best not to go full power right away. Maybe take it slow at first.

6 Tips Against Muscle Soreness

Muscle soreness is a common result of intense physical activity and can be painful. There are various measures that can help alleviate muscle soreness and promote recovery:

  1. Gentle movement: Light activities such as walking or gentle stretching can promote blood circulation and help loosen the muscles.
  2. Heat and cold: Alternating baths or applying heat and cold packs can relieve pain and support alleviation.
  3. Massage: A gentle massage with Weleda Arnica Massage Oil can promote blood circulation and relax the muscles.
  4. Hydration: Drinking enough water helps supply the muscles with nutrients and transport waste products faster.
  5. Nutrition: A balanced diet with sufficient proteins and vitamins can promote muscle recovery.
  6. Rest: Give your muscles enough rest to recover.
By following these measures, you can effectively counteract muscle soreness and get fit again faster.
