UEBT

We contribute to a world in which people and biodiversity thrive. We are a member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) because we are committed to conserving and sustainably using biodiversity in plant cultivation, harvesting, and further processing. It is important to us to treat all parties involved in the supply chain fairly and ensure they are paid equitably.
What does the UEBT label stand for: "SOURCING WITH RESPECT"?

Weleda has been a member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) since 2011. This independent and globally active organisation promotes the respectful procurement of natural raw materials. Its ambitious standard for ethical procurement supports sustainable economic growth, local development, and the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity.
Our membership in the Union for Ethical for BioTrade assures our customers that we care about people and biodiversity In other words, we care about the soil, microorganisms, water, air, plants, animals, and the producers of our raw materials.
How do we protect the habitats where our raw materials are sourced?

Habitats and natural areas can only be protected in collaboration with local communities. We take responsibility for the people who grow, harvest, and process food for us. Only by working together can we ensure that their habitats are not exploited but are used sustainably and safeguarded.
The UEBT standard is based on 7 guiding principles:
- Conservation of biodiversity
- Sustainable use of biodiversity
- Fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from biodiversity between companies and local communities
- Traceability of natural ingredients to their origins
- Compliance with national and international regulations
- Fair working conditions for employees and ensuring local food security
- Prevention of land grabbing and measures to prevent illegal land use
What is the UEBT?
The UEBT provides a globally recognised standard for ethical trade in natural resources. This non-profit organisation was established as an initiative of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Why did we choose the UEBT?
The UEBT standard encompasses social, environmental, and economic aspects. By adhering to these standards, we actively contribute to safeguarding the diversity of our ecosystems. We provide habitats for animals and plants, and support people around the world in leading dignified and healthy lives. We protect our world’s natural resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood for future generations.
Building upon the UEBT’s seven guiding principles, we developed a catalogue of questions and a risk management system, which are integral to our supplier qualification process for raw materials. This process includes measures such as conducting on-site visits and performing our own audits.
What are we doing to conserve biodiversity?
More and more consumers are consciously choosing Weleda natural cosmetics. This increasing demand allows us to have a greater positive influence on people and biodiversity within our supply chains. Our membership in UEBT is a significant contribution to this effort. Our vision is for more and more companies to adopt this path of ethical procurement.
Through its agricultural management initiatives, Weleda is active worldwide wherever plant-based raw materials are cultivated. In areas such as soil health, biodiversity, and social commitment, Weleda acts as a local player and assumes responsibility.
