Bryophyllum pinnatum for inner peace and good sleep
Botanical profile and effects
Sleepless nights or the feeling of not being able to sleep through the night are widespread. Many people look for tips for falling asleep, home remedies for better sleep, or a herbal sleep aid that works gently and reliably. Bryophyllum pinnatum, also known as the life plant, Air Plant, Goethe Plant, or Mother of Thousands, is such a medicinal plant that has been used for centuries against states of restlessness.
What makes Bryophyllum pinnatum so special?
Even the name hints at its special qualities. In Greek, “bryein” means to sprout or germinate, and “phyllon” means leaf. Bryophyllum pinnatum (Kalanchoe pinnata) is known for its impressive vitality: Tiny plantlets grow along the edges of its leaves, and when they fall to the ground, they develop into new plants—a true symbol of vitality and regeneration. Bryophyllum as a medicinal plant is capable of imparting this vitality to humans for an active day. This is a prerequisite for a relaxed and peaceful night, allowing the regeneration of vital forces.
In the early 19th century, the medicinal plant came to Europe, and Goethe was so fascinated by this plant that he studied it intensively. Bryophyllum pinnatum originally comes from Madagascar and has long been valued as a remedy there and among the Amazonian peoples. Today, Bryophyllum pinnatum is at home in many tropical and subtropical regions. In traditional medicine, it is used in many ways – for calming, against headaches, fever, allergies, or for wounds.
Bryophyllum pinnatum at Weleda
Since the 19th century, Bryophyllum pinnatum has also been known in Europe and has been used by Weleda since 1928 as an anthroposophic Medicine against states of restlessness.
Scientific research on Bryophyllum pinnatum
For over 40 years, Bryophyllum pinnatum has been researched in preclinical and clinical studies – among other things for sleep disorders, premature labor, anxiety, restless legs syndrome, as well as for overactive bladder. The medicinal plant has a relaxing effect and can be used as a natural sedative for sleep problems, even during menopause. An advantage of the plant is that it has no sedative effect and no risk of dependency.
A valuable active ingredient
From the end of August to the beginning of September, the leaves are harvested in the greenhouse of the biodynamic medicinal plant garden in Wetzgau. They can be easily broken off from the stems and go directly to the plant processing area in the garden. There, depending on the medicine, the leaves are either chopped and pressed immediately, or the chopped leaves are mixed with alcohol and stored at room temperature for about two weeks and then pressed as a tincture. Another special manufacturing process in anthroposophic pharmacy is the Rh process (Link). In this process, special aqueous preparations are made from fresh plants. For this, the plant juices are repeatedly warmed to 37°C in the morning, rhythmically shaken, cooled to 4°C in the evening, and rhythmically shaken again. The resulting medicines do not need to be preserved and are free from alcohol.

Weleda produces effective medicines based on centuries-old knowledge and modern research – for more peace, noticeable relaxation, and restful sleep.
