Understanding Allergies and Weleda remedies to support

Allergies are a common condition that occurs when the immune system reacts to foreign substances known as allergens.   For people with allergies, substances that would normally be identified as harmless are reacted to as an invader by the immune system and an overreactive response occurs triggering allergy symptoms.  Here in Hawkes Bay where Weleda is based allergies are a common issue with the high prevalence of sprays and pesticides across the horticultural sector, and pollens such as wattle and pine trees.

There are common types of allergies, ranging from seasonal – often caused by pollen from trees, grasses and weeds to food allergies which are activated by certain foods such as nuts, shellfish and dairy or Pet allergies caused by proteins found in pet dander, and dust allergies resulting from dust mites and Mold spores. When exposed to an allergen, the body releases histamines, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, itching, runny nose, and swelling, wheezing, skin rashes, and dark circles under the eyes. These symptoms can cause a lot of discomfort for the sufferer.

The reason the immune system can become over-sensitive is varied.  Factors such as stress, poor digestion, lack of sleep or inadequate nutrition can play a role, or even reduced exposure to microbes in early childhood (due to cleaner environments, antibiotics, or lack of exposure to infections) may lead to an underdeveloped immune system. As a result, the immune system may overreact to harmless substances.  There is no one size fits all and the underlying trigger can be different for each person. Some people have a genetic predisposition - If you have a family history of allergies, asthma, or other atopic conditions, you are more likely to develop allergies. This is due to inherited genes that influence how your immune system reacts to allergens. The gut microbiome also plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system. An imbalance in gut bacteria (due to diet, antibiotics, or other factors) can contribute to immune system dysregulation and allergic responses.

Basic Care

Identify then eliminate or avoid possible allergens. Simplify food intake.

As you can imagine, the allergy symptoms can be a source of misery for the affected individuals, but there are some practical steps that can help reduce the symptoms and here at Weleda we have some great remedies to help alleviate the suffering.

A first step is to try and identify and minimise your exposure to the allergens.  For example, eliminating trigger foods, or environmental pollutants.  Aim for organic, spray free food.  As much as possible eat wholefood, unprocessed, simplify your diet to reduce potential irritants and support digestion.

It is important to stay hydrated during allergy season and increasing fluid intake can help reduce the symptoms.  You many include herbal teas such as nettle, elderberry, to help soothe inflammation and calm the immune system

Consuming local honey can also help build immunity to pollen in your area, reducing symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Using a saline solution to rinse your nasal passages can help clear allergens and reduce nasal congestion.

Consuming foods rich in quercetin, like apples, onions, and berries can help.  Quercetin is a natural antihistamine that may help reduce allergic reactions.

Probiotics: Maintaining a healthy gut with probiotics can support your immune system and may help reduce allergy symptoms, including probiotic rich foods like kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut or acidophilus yogurt can help.
