At Weleda, we're excited to announce a significant step forward in our sustainability journey with the reintroduction of our beloved Skin Food and Skin Food Light in new, recyclable aluminium tubes. This change marks a return to our roots while embracing cutting-edge technology to minimize our environmental footprint.
The Evolution of Our Packaging
From Plastic to Aluminium
A few years ago, we made a switch to plastic tubes due to sustainability concerns highlighted by a Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) study. However, our commitment to sustainability has driven us to explore better alternatives. Now, thanks to advancements in recycling technology, we are thrilled to reintroduce our products in aluminium tubes made from fully recycled rAlu (at least 95% post-consumer material and 5% post-industrial material). This transition aligns with our goal to reduce the environmental impact associated with packaging.
Why Aluminium?
Aluminium recycling offers significant environmental benefits. Compared to virgin aluminium production, recycling aluminium consumes less energy and reduces carbon emissions. Researching alternatives to virgin aluminium was important because of the negative environmental impact of mining bauxite, from which aluminium is extracted, and the high energy consumption for aluminium production. By choosing recycled aluminium, we contribute to a circular economy where materials are reused and repurposed, minimizing waste and conserving natural resources.
Easy Recycling for Everyone
Weleda Skin Food and Skin Food Light aluminium tubes are designed for easy recycling. Simply remove the cap and dispose of the tube through your home kerbside recycling program. The caps, which are not accepted in kerbside recycling, can be returned to us through our TerraCycle® Beauty Zero Waste Box™ Returns Scheme or dropped to one of the new voluntary Caps & Lids Recycling Scheme collection points (if active in your area).

Rest assured, while our packaging has evolved, the formulations of Skin Food and Skin Food Light remain unchanged. You can continue to enjoy the same high-quality products you know and love, now in packaging that reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship.
