Edelweiss

Fair Trade Edelweiss

Coined as the “King of the Alps,” the sturdy Edelweiss flower grows in the wild between 1,800 and 3,000 meters above sea level. Over thousands of years, the Edelweiss flower has adapted to the challenges of its natural habitat—hot sun, wind and vast changes in temperature. This strong flower therefore helps protect even the most sensitive skin from the sun.

Andreas Ellenberger, Manager of Plants and Gardens for Weleda Switzerland, along with other outside partners and experts, pioneered the cultivation of the wild Edelweiss plant. Weleda’s Edelweiss is now organically grown with the “Valplantees” cooperative within its natural habitat, the Alps, 1,200 meters above sea level. Here, the Edelweiss plant has retained its wild characteristics but grows even more profusely and larger. As a result of these positive developments, Weleda is currently supporting an elevation experiment conducted by the research institute Mediplant, exploring the extent to which altitude influences the size and active ingredients of the flower.
